Theatre 8, Ulster Hospital

The Client required a new theatre suite space to augment the current Operating Theatre Department and assist with accommodating the number of operations within their current programme. A space within the existing Critical Care Complex had been identified, adjacent to the existing Operating Theatre Department. Currently an unused Endoscopy Suite the proposal saw the area stripped out and redesigned to provide an operating theatre, minor operations room, procedure room, recovery area and associated ancillary clinical and administrative accommodation that would form the new suite.

A new reception space is accessed from the Level 02 ‘hospital street’ and patient access split in two different directions determined by the nature of the treatment being received. Colours and materiality were selected via workshop meetings with hospital teams and intended to create a safe and welcoming environment while addressing infection control requirements. All areas accessed from the reception are security controlled and accessible only with staff supervision. Access is also available from the main Theatre Department to integrate the new suite into the overall clinical theatre provision.
